Google Chrome is silently downloading a 4GB AI model to your device
Security researcher Alexander Hanff discovered that Google Chrome has been silently installing Gemini Nano, a 4GB on-device AI model, on users’ machines without asking. The file, called weights.bin, lands in a hidden folder called OptGuideOnDeviceModel inside your Chrome profile directory. There is no opt-in prompt. No notification. No cookie banner.
