Google pours up to $40 billion into Anthropic in largest AI investment yet

Google is committing up to $40 billion to Anthropic in a deal that reshapes the AI investment landscape. $10 billion lands immediately at a $350 billion valuation. Another $30 billion sits behind performance milestones.

This comes days after Amazon dropped an extra $5 billion into the same company, with room for more. Both deals value Anthropic identically. The message is clear: hyperscalers are tripping over each other to anchor the next great AI lab.

The compute picture

Google Cloud is pledging 5 gigawatts of TPU capacity over five years. That stacks on top of an existing arrangement with Google and Broadcom for 3.5 gigawatts of custom TPU-based chips starting in 2027. Meanwhile, Amazon’s broader agreement expects Anthropic to spend around $100 billion over time for roughly 5 gigawatts of AWS compute.

Anthropic is effectively guaranteeing itself multi-gigawatt scale across two cloud providers simultaneously. No other AI company has managed that.

Why the frenzy

Anthropic released Mythos earlier this month, its most capable model to date. The company positioned it as having serious cybersecurity applications and restricted access accordingly. It already leaked anyway. Powerful models attract powerful interest, and the infrastructure demands are staggering.

Claude Code and Claude Cowork have driven explosive usage growth. Controversies at OpenAI pushed enterprise customers toward Anthropic. The company went from $350 billion valuation in February to fielding investor interest at $800 billion or higher. An IPO could land as early as October.

What this actually means

Google is both Anthropic’s competitor (Gemini) and its infrastructure lifeline (TPUs). That tension defines the current era. Microsoft did the same thing with OpenAI. Amazon is doing it with Anthropic too. Nobody wants to depend on a rival, but nobody can afford to let a frontier lab starve for compute either.

The $40 billion headline number assumes Anthropic hits aggressive targets. But even the floor of $10 billion from Google plus $5 billion from Amazon in a single week represents an unprecedented capital concentration in one AI company. The last time tech saw this kind of sprint was cloud computing in 2010. This feels bigger.
