Meta acquires Assured Robot Intelligence to build AI brains for humanoid robots
Meta just bought itself a robotics company. The social media giant acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a San Diego and New York-based startup building AI models for humanoid robots. The deal closed Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
ARI was founded by Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, two researchers with serious credentials in robot learning. Pinto previously co-founded Fauna Robotics, the kid-size humanoid startup that Amazon snatched up in March. Wang also worked at Fauna before spinning off to start ARI in 2025.
The entire ARI team is joining Meta’s Superintelligence Labs division, the unit responsible for the company’s most ambitious AI projects. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the deal was about advancing humanoid robot development.
This acquisition did not happen in a vacuum. Two days earlier, Meta raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast by $10 billion, pushing total projected spending past $72 billion. The same week, the company told employees it would eliminate 8,000 jobs. The message is clear: Meta is pivoting hard toward physical AI and away from projects that do not directly serve that goal.
The humanoid robotics space is getting crowded fast. Tesla has Optimus. Amazon bought Fauna. Google DeepMind has been working on robotic manipulation for years. 1X Technologies, backed by OpenAI, just opened a factory in California aiming to produce 10,000 home robots this year. Bloomberg pegs the humanoid market as potentially reaching $750 billion by 2035.
Meta’s play here is not to build the robot itself. According to multiple reports, the strategy mirrors what Google did with Android and Qualcomm did with chips: build the foundational software platform that every other hardware maker depends on. ARI gives Meta the AI models that let robots perceive, navigate, and manipulate objects in the real world. That is the hard part. The hardware is increasingly commoditized.
The acquisition also signals a shift away from Meta’s augmented reality ambitions. Glass Almanac noted that AR program announcements have dried up this quarter, with the ARI deal marking a clear pivot from headset research toward robotics.
Pinto and Wang bring rare expertise. Teaching AI systems to handle messy, unpredictable physical environments remains one of the hardest unsolved problems in robotics. If Meta can crack that layer and own the software platform underneath every humanoid robot, the payoff makes the metaverse look like a side project.
